Skills Programme – On-line Training and Education


This skills programme has been designed for retail sales staff in mind. However, is suitable for anyone wanting to know more about paint application, without all the technical content. The skills programme will be linked to one of our currently accredited unit standards, so your company can gain BBBEE points for training.

This course will be presented as an on-line skills programme, which staff can register for and take up at any time. 30 hours of training has been divided into bit sized video recorded demonstrations, lessons and assessments. Watch this space for the launch of this programme.


The SA Paint Industry Training Institute (SAPITI) Offers a short course in
Retail Application Theoretical Course at Basic Level

E-learning on-line video recorded training. Duration 30 hours - Time Frame 4 hours per day depending on the space pace of the candidate.

Ideal for sales and DIY personnel, owners and supervisors of applicator firms and any non-technical staff wanting to learn about preparation and application of interior and exterior surfaces. An ideal induction course for anyone in the coatings industry.


Course Content
  • Module 1 – Introduction to the function of paints, paint terminology, what goes into a can of paint and more topics.
  • Module 2 – Application and preparation covers the types of substrates and their uses, choosing the right product type and steps to a successful paint job.
  • Module 3 – Decorating and application covers the power of colour, paint projects, time planning and tools, equipment and protective gear.
  • Module 4 – Problem solver, health and safety covers problem solving for blistering, yellowing and cracking, flaking, chalking, fading, fungal and cheesing. Health and safety and the environment, using protective gear, taking care of solvent based products and understanding of SDS information.
  • Module 5 – Hints and tips covers information sources, FAQ’s and the ‘cardinal rules’.
  • Practical demonstrations are shown during the course.

A certificate of attendance is issued in addition to a certificate of competence issued to those who pass our written assessment.
